The United Architects of the Philippines - Davao Chapter recently held a three-day event titled Defining Spaces 14: Designing Spaces for a Better Normal at SM City Davao on February 24 to 26, 2023. Gilbert Peter Fortich took the initiative to organize this event on behalf of the Chapter, with his experience with the previous Defining Spaces events, together with the organizing committee, aiming to showcase the latest innovations and sustainable practices for a better future that tackles mainly the aftermath of the Pandemic.
Since the first day of the event, was declared a holiday, the event was packed with individuals, architects, and architecture students. There was a ceremonial ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by an inspiring message from Vice Mayor Melchor Quitain Jr., who addressed the assembled members and officers following the opening remarks of Gilbert Fortich, Chapter President of the UAP. The past National President of UAP, Benjamin Panganiban, also gave a special message as the participating exhibitors were acknowledged. With the initiative of the Organizing Committee, the event also featured a performance by the local band artist, "Tatot." together with the keynote speakers Ar. Ramon Tanglao and Ar. Royal Pineda. Daikin Philippines also presented its latest products, and the architecture students from various schools had the opportunity to learn from Ar. Saldy Mascardo's basic manual rendering demonstration.
The second day of the event was dedicated to the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxillary (UAPSA) with an opening remark by the UAPSA District D1 Director. The series of speakers was then started by Mr. Mark Seng of "Design Davao Society." In a subsequent discussion, Miguel Guerrero discussed designing a better normal in more detail. Since the event is not limited to the architects only but open to all in relation to construction industry, Engr. Slater Young was invited to have a discussion on the title "Ask Slater," which caused an overwhelming crowd in the event area. Then, Engr. Bierny Lemana, a representative of Holcim Philippines, talked about some of their products that will really help with the development of a better normal for everybody. During the evening, UAPSA hosted a number of contests, such as the Sayaw Arki group dance showdown, Battle of the Bands, and Trivia Night. Several architecture students from different schools participated in the contests.
The third day of the event continued with the UAPSA Arki Quiz Bowl and the UAPSA Singing Contest, still joined by architecture students, showcasing their innate talents to the crowd in the area. Keynote Speakers at this day include Ar. Felizardo Cipriano Jr and Ar. Jessica Casison shared their thoughts on designing spaces for a better future. The event also featured a performance by the Next Option Band, and a fashion show, a trademark of Defining Spaces where students and architects will show different participating companies on the stage together with DJ Nigel Braw’s set. The event concluded with an award and closing ceremony for the participating exhibitors and architects.
The Defining Spaces 14 event by UAP-Davao Chapter was a great success, and it showcased the importance of designing spaces for a better normal. The event also provided an opportunity for students and professionals to come together, learn from experts, and showcase their talents.
